What the Checked badge means

Anyone can list an app on YotoApps. The badge tells you a volunteer maintainer has tried it on a real player and checked it does what it says.

  1. Submitted

    The maker fills in the form, including what data the app sends and any AI it uses. It's listed straight away as Not checked.

  2. Tested

    A maintainer installs it on a player, checks the maker is who they say, and watches what it connects to.

  3. Checked

    It gets the badge and a "Checked" date. We recheck when the app has a major update, or once a year.

What we check

  • It installs and works as described on at least one player
  • The maker is a real, contactable person or company
  • The data it sends matches what the maker told us
  • No hidden ads, payments or sign-ups
  • AI use matches what the maker declared, including what's live
  • Nothing unsuitable for young children

What it doesn't mean

  • It isn't official or approved by Yoto
  • It isn't a security audit or a guarantee
  • It doesn't mean unchecked apps are unsafe, just that nobody has checked them yet
  • We don't rank or review how good an app is
  • Using AI isn't a mark against an app. We just make sure you know

Common questions

Why is my app still Not checked?
Maintainers are volunteers. Most apps are checked within two weeks. If it's been longer, reply to your submission email.
Can a Checked badge be removed?
Yes. If an app changes what it does, where it sends data or how it uses AI, it goes back to Not checked until we recheck it.
Is this the same as Yoto verified?
No. Yoto verifies developers' apps itself, and users of unverified apps see a warning when they sign in with Yoto. Our badge means a community maintainer has tested the app on a real player. A listing can have either, both or neither, and we show Yoto's status as a fact on the page when the maker tells us.
How do you check AI use?
We play the app and watch what it connects to. We look for generated text, pictures and voices, and ask the maker about anything we can't tell. Live AI output can't be checked in full, which is why we label it.
I found a problem with an app
Use "Report a problem" on its page. Reported apps show a notice while we look into it.
